Ingredients
  • 1½ cups masoor daal (whole French Green lentils)
  • 6 cups water
  • 1 tsp salt or to taste
  • ¼ tsp turmeric
  • 3 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 medium tomato, roughly chopped
  • 3 - 4 cloves garlic
  • ½ inch piece fresh ginger
  • 1 green chili
  • ¼ tsp cumin powder
  • 1 tsp coriander powder
  • ¼ tsp red chili powder
  • ½ tsp turmeric powder
  • ¼ tsp salt or to taste
  • ¼ cup cooked onion purée
  • 2 tbsp fresh coriander, chopped
  • Water as required
Instructions
  1. Rinse the lentils with water.
  2. In a large heavy saucepan, add lentils, water, salt and turmeric. Bring it to a boil, then, reduce the heat to simmer until lentils have softened about 30 minutes.
  3. Meanwhile, in a blender, add tomato, garlic, ginger and green chilies; grind it into a fine mixture.
  4. In another large saucepan, heat oil over medium heat and add tomato mixture to it. Add cumin powder, coriander powder, red chili powder, turmeric and salt. Mix well; cover and cook until oil start to separate stirring frequently.
  5. Add cooked onion purée; cook again until oil start to separate stirring occasionally.
  6. Add the cooked lentils; mix well. Add more liquid if required. Gently simmer for 10 minutes. Turn off the heat.
  7. Garnish with fresh chopped coriander.
