Ingredients
1½ cups masoor daal (whole French Green lentils)
6 cups water
1 tsp salt or to taste
¼ tsp turmeric
3 tbsp olive oil
1 medium tomato, roughly chopped
3 - 4 cloves garlic
½ inch piece fresh ginger
1 green chili
¼ tsp cumin powder
1 tsp coriander powder
¼ tsp red chili powder
½ tsp turmeric powder
¼ tsp salt or to taste
¼ cup cooked onion purée
2 tbsp fresh coriander, chopped
Water as required
Instructions
Rinse the lentils with water.
In a large heavy saucepan, add lentils, water, salt and turmeric. Bring it to a boil, then, reduce the heat to simmer until lentils have softened about 30 minutes.
Meanwhile, in a blender, add tomato, garlic, ginger and green chilies; grind it into a fine mixture.
In another large saucepan, heat oil over medium heat and add tomato mixture to it. Add cumin powder, coriander powder, red chili powder, turmeric and salt. Mix well; cover and cook until oil start to separate stirring frequently.
Add cooked onion purée; cook again until oil start to separate stirring occasionally.
Add the cooked lentils; mix well. Add more liquid if required. Gently simmer for 10 minutes. Turn off the heat.
Garnish with fresh chopped coriander.
