Turmeric Milk Recipe – Haldi Wala Doodh, How to make Turmeric Milk – Haldi Wala Doodh

Turmeric Milk Recipe – Haldi Wala Doodh with step by step photos and easy to follow instructions:

Turmeric Milk – Haldi Wala Doodh is a traditional Indian Ayurvedic beverage usually taken before going to bed. It is made by cooking milk with turmeric powder or fresh turmeric. Sometimes other spices and herbs such as cinnamon, cardamoms, black peppercorns, poppy seeds or Banafsha (sweet violet) are added to maximize the health benefits of this golden liquid. You can use fresh turmeric or dry turmeric powder. Be sure to get a good quality organic turmeric that is free of added impurities.

It is very common in Indian household to drink warm milk before going to bed. Warm milk helps in relaxing your body and get a good night’s sleep. During winter days, I replace the plain white milk drink with golden turmeric milk to keep the cold and flu at distance. Turmeric Milk – Haldi Wala Doodh is an excellent remedy to cure cold, flu, sore throat and cough. It is my go to remedy when I need to repel the nasty cold, flu or cough.

When I make Haldi Wala Doodh, I like to add whole peppercorns and a touch of cinnamon or green cardamom to add flavor.  The black peppercorns helps the body to absorb the turmeric benefits. Turmeric has somewhat pungent smell that is not easily taken by everyone. It is important that the milk is cooked properly with turmeric to eliminate the raw scent of turmeric. After bringing the milk to a hard boil, I reduce the heat to simmer to let the milk cook gently and slowly for a few minutes. Alternatively, the vanilla lovers can add some vanilla extract to enhance the flavor.

Other than soothing cold and flu, Turmeric has many other health benefits. It has anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant and anti-bacterial properties. Turmeric helps to reduce swelling and pain due to injuries and prevents infection when applied to wounds and cuts. It is a common practice in India, to give a cup of warm Turmeric Milk – Haldi Wala Doodh mixed with some ghee, to an injured person to reduce inflammation and help the person heal faster from the injuries. It is my favorite way to consume Turmeric Milk – Haldi Wala Doodh – mixed with a teaspoon of ghee (Yumm!!)

Turmeric Milk helps detoxify the body by fighting the free radicals. Turmeric mixed with barley flour and rose water makes an excellent face scrub to clean the damaged skin and make the facial skin glow.

Let’s make some Turmeric Milk – Haldi Wala Doodh and do our body a favor by keeping it healthy and glowing.

How to make Turmeric Milk – Haldi Wala Doodh:

Wow, I actually made this yesterday afternoon. Except it called for one table spoon of coconut oil & two TB of maple syrup! It was amazing! I want to try it again with peppercorn & cardamon. What a coincidence!
